Montessori at Home: Trays & Baskets

If you've seen pictures of Montessori classrooms or home environments, you may have noticed that Montessorians are quite fond of trays and baskets. These organize and define activities for the child, which makes them more appealing, and ultimately, easier to put away.

By containing materials and activities this way, we are making them easier to manage and reinforcing the concept of "a place for everything, and everything in its place." The routine of putting items back into a tray or basket helps create a little structure around the process of cleaning up. It also creates reliability in where a child might find the activity next time they want to use it.

Like anything, it takes practice and repetition to build this habit. Having a system in place is a big first step.

When it comes to where to get these trays and baskets, look around your home. Chances are you have a lot more than what you think you do. Small boxes, box lids, gift bags, bowls, drawer organizers, etc. are all great options.
